Honest. Fun. Caring.

About Us

For too long Australians have endured financial advice that is full of jargon and hidden fees. We think Australians deserve better!

In 2015 we started Secured Wealth with single purpose to provide practical, honest and caring advice without complexity. We believe that value is not measured by a product but by measurable changes in your life.

Let’s also have a bit fun along the way..

Who’s Who

Liesl Maslen

Having worked in corporations like NAB and Tyndall for many years I just love the freedom of working with clients and doing meaningful stuff. On a daily basis my role is to ensure that we are giving the best advice and that it is implemented. In that way I often talk to a client in London or across town in Sydney. It’s never boring.

Like Sam and Luke I am never too far away from the beach. On weekends you can find me relaxing with friends and family.

Chris Mallett

My driving passion and skill is to diagnose and solve your complex financial concerns – making the complicated simple and putting time back into your life for what really matters. My aim is to build honest and long lasting connections with my clients, you are not a transaction and I am not a product sales person.

In my years of experience working with a diverse portfolio of clients ranging from mums and dads to business owners, corporate executives and professional sportspeople; one thing that everyone has in common is the need for clarity and direction regardless of your life stage. This drives my goal to be integral in each of my clients lives and ensure that you are financially secure and protected, have a thorough understanding of your financial position and are clear on the steps required to reach your goals.

I am part of a new generation of financial professionals that believe that value is not measured by a product but by measurable changes in your life. Developing a tailored strategy and working alongside you to achieve your goals is what’s paramount.

In my spare time you’ll find me at the beach enjoying a surf or playing guitar and attempting to sing, much to my partner’s delight!

Chris has a Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy) and an Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning.

LUKE POYNTER

Having to choose between getting the medical treatment you need and providing for your family is a position no one wants to be in, having to deal with Insurers when all you can think about is trying to get better, or wondering what will happen if life suddenly takes a different turn are all reasons why I focus my time on protecting our clients with Insurance.

When the call comes in with news of a claim I instantly know that the time the client and I spent together over their kitchen table was worthwhile, I know that for this family everything will be OK.

I’ve worked for the major Insurance companies and started my career assessing claims on the same products I recommend and I understand those little words in the back of your 200 page PDS so you don’t have to. I’m not here to tell you how to invest money or how to spend it, you live the life you want to live and each year I’ll make sure we adjust your cover to fit you.

Don’t be surprised if I have sand in my hair when we meet, as a lover of the outdoors between meetings you will find me at the beach surfing, diving for lobsters or heading up the coast for a weekend away!

SAM KITCHEN

“Today we sold our business and are moving to a vineyard in Mudgee. Thanks so much Sam”… I still remember the words of the client when after they had worked so hard and now they were able to live out their dreams. Being part of that is what drives me.

After spending many great years working in some of Australia’s top accounting firms, I got bored of making the rich get richer and wanted to create something that will change the lives of ordinary Australians.

I am part of a generation of financial professionals that believe that value is not measured by a product but by measurable changes in your life.

My free time is focussed on being a chef and taxi driver for my family. If I have any free time I enjoy lifesaving at Queenscliff and Toastmasters.

Sam has been awarded the AFA NSW award for Education in Financial Advice

CPA (Financial Planning Specialist), Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts, Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning

KATE MITCHELL

Kate is the go to person for reviews at Secured Wealth. On an average day, I spend the time on the phone to clients or following up an investment manager. As a mother of five, I don’t get much time to myself. In the precious few moments to myself , I love to follow my passion for photography or just go wine tasting with friends.

How do we get ahead?

We are asked this question every day. You may know it as financial freedom or independence, it’s that idea that you can step away and do what you want without being bridled with financial commitments.

We help clients do this everyday.

Here’s a list of recent client aspirations we have met:

Save, purchase and cash flow a large family home on the North Shore in Sydney
– Tom and Anna

Help us to plan for retirement so that we understand what lifestyle we can sustain long term and how to budget for annual overseas trips and helping the kids buy property
– Angus and Marie

Finish work seven years earlier than anticipated so that I can spend more time with the grandkids
– Sarah

Can I invest and save the planet at the same time?

Yes is called Environmental Social Governance (ESG) investing and it is the hottest (should that be greenest?) thing.

The idea is to invest through an ethical and environmental lens. It sounds simple but there are many traps. For example, we can hold off on coal investments but what about the banks that lend to coal mines? What about companies without female representation on the board? Will we miss out on returns? Can I do ethical investing in my super fund?

We do the hard work for you to bring you the best options that suit you and your own ethical standards without giving up on returns.

Case Study

James, 38 single, working in tech had his super invested in a balanced fund. The balanced fund had exposure to oil and coal companies that were not in line with James’ own ethical view. We investigated some options and were able to change his super fund to remove these stocks to give him the peace of mind that his money was going towards ethical investments.

Is it better to pay down the mortgage or invest?

In normal times, the answer would be to pay down the mortgage.

With interest rates below 2% p.a. these are far from normal times. Is there another option? An alternative option may be to invest in a bunch of shares or purchase an investment property. This has two main benefits: diversification and deductibility.

Making an investment instead of paying the down the mortgage has two main benefits. The first is that you are diversifying your assets outside of your home. The second benefit is deductibility. If you use debt to fund an investment property, then the debt will tax deductible. This will help you get a higher overall return as your investments maybe tax deductible.

Case Study

Mr and Mrs Knight were in their late 30s. Both were earning high salaries and they had a small mortgage left on their home. After we modelled the various options including putting extra into super or paying down their mortgage we concluded that it was better to invest in an investment property.  Four years later the investment property is paying for itself and their wealth has grown and they are able to pay down the original mortgage faster.

Insurance

Protecting your lifestyle and family is our top priority

You wouldn’t build a house without a foundation or set sail without a life jacket so it stands to reason there is no such thing as having a solid financial plan without considering your insurance needs.

You earn a big income but what if that suddenly stops? How does your partner manage the mortgage, care for the kids and go to work if you suddenly die?

Using Insurance we’ll show you how to keep your family financially on track if you leave the rails or even after you are long gone.

If your premiums have been rising, here’s what we can do?

There are a lot of reasons for premiums to move over time but most importantly there are just as many options available to keep those costs down. Here are three we can help you with:

– Review your existing cover to see if it is still appropriate. Have your debt levels changed? did the kids leave home yet? what other alternatives do you have?

– Look carefully at your policy. Are there expensive options you no longer need?

– Review the wider Insurance market. Is there a better offer with another Insurer?

The good news is we can do all the hard work for you at no cost to you.

Here’s what we can do to help your claim

37 Year old Female, diagnosed with aggressive stage 4 breast cancer.

Once notified of the diagnosis we first met with the Insurer to discuss what information they need, then we booked an appointment with the clients specialist Oncologist to get the claim forms completed, lastly we met with her GP to get the secondary sign off.

This was then lodged with the Insurer for assessment and it was paid within one week.

We were thankful to be able to meet with the client and her family to hand over the cheque for which was used for her ongoing treatment and paying down debts. The most important part of our Claims Assistance is that the client and her husband were able to concentrate on her recovery and spend time with the family instead of dealing with Insurers.
